An Overview of a sample Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Checklist:

  1. Website architecture.  Evaluate the way in which your website has been developed.  Some methods/technologies such as Flash are not ideal for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) although some flash elements can still be used as an aesthetic addition to your site.  It is also not recommended that you use Flash for displaying essential user information or main site navigation.

  2. Research and compile relevant keywords.  Think like your customer or target audience, not from your own business perspective.  It might be worth carrying out some market research here to find out how people would look for your services or products on the internet.
  3. Treat every page as its own landing page.  Optimise every page for search engines.  This is worth spending some time on.  Think about each service or product in its own right and choose keywords or combinations of keywords, known as key phrases that are relevant to that product or service.  Don’t replicate these keywords in other areas of your site.  Try to create an original page every time you optimise.
  4. Replicate, replicate, replicate – your keyword or phrase throughout the page that you are using.  Your keyword should appear in the web page title, H1 heading tags, alt tags, image title, throughout the content text (copy), web page descriptions, web page keywords, and links from other internal and external website pages.
  5. Homepage links, content text (copy), web page title, web page description and web page keywords.
  6. Provide a sitemap for your user, this also helps the search engines find their way around your site.  Better still provide an XML sitemap also.
  7. Submit your website to search engines (although this should be automatically picked up by the search engines themselves)
  8. Submit your website to directory websites.
  9. Submit your website to Google Local Business listings.
  10. Analyse your results using Website Traffic Analysis and don’t be afraid to experiment, compare and change pages that are not getting the desired results.
  11. Occasionally boost your incoming traffic by using Social Media Optimisation (SMO), Pay-Per-Click PPC) campaigns and in particular, articles.
